Power Steering; All-new Color Updates Introduced

on Commander 1000 X and Limited Models

2013 Can-Am Commander
To start, all 2013 Commander XT, X and Limited models come standard with the Can-Am DPS (Dynamic Power Steering) power steering system and Visco-Lok QE front differential. They added to their line-up a Commander DPS model, which also includes DPS and QE. Can-Am retained a base model Commander that does not include the DPS power steering or Quick Engaging Visco-Lok.

Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)
Calibrated specifically for use in the Commander side-by-side, BRP’s DPS system offers variable steering assistance and is designed to offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed. This technology also includes a Direct Link setup that uses advanced magnetic field sensors for faster response to steering input than competitive technology, which then minimizes steering lag. Less kickback and more trail feedback is supplied to the operator because of the 50:1 final gear ratio, which is the largest in the industry. A high-capacity 50-amp motor means the DPS will never fade with heavy use, and all DPS-equipped models also come with the Visco-Lok QE.

Visco-Lok QE Front Differential
QE stands for quicker engagement. Although the Visco-Lok QE front differential system offers the same features and benefits of normal Visco-Lok, it also acts faster than it does on non-DPS Commanders. Depending on where you ride, the addition of QE may not be that big of deal.  But  those who often encounter rock sections on the trail will enjoy the QE feature. QE automatically locks/unlocks both front wheels when needed, allowing all four wheels to claw over obstacles, through mud and soft dirt easier.

All DPS-equipped models come with the Visco-Lok QE calibration, giving an even quicker engagement of the front differential. It progressively transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the gripping one – automatically with no buttons to push or levers to pull. Plus, there’s no wheel hop or driveline wind-up, so the system is totally transparent to the driver and extremely easy to steer. Can lock up to 100 percent with no rev or speed limiter. This differential, unlike some competitors’ differentials, does not have a speed or rev limiter. DPS and Visco-Lok QE, when combined, improve handling and performance in slow-speed technical terrain.

Valcourt, Québec, Canada, June 4, 2012 –BRP has enhanced its award-winning Can-Am Commander side-by-side vehicle line-up for 2013 with the addition of Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) and two striking color schemes for both its Commander 1000 X and 1000 Limited packages. The Can-Am Commander side-by-side vehicles deliver even more on the Can-Am pledge to produce enthusiast-inspired vehicles with cutting-edge design and meaningful innovation by offering two proven engine options, five overall platforms, including a new DPS package, and industry-leading versatility.

“The addition of DPS was a logical progression that blends well with our long-standing belief to offer vehicles that appeal to the end user’s brand enthusiasm and also produce the most powerful, capable and comfortable products in the industry,” said Yves Leduc, vice-president and general manager, North America. “The new Can-Am Commander side-by-side vehicles with DPS, which continue to lead the industry in terms of overall innovation, appeal, convenience and versatility, have raised industry standards once again and will enable our dealers to better achieve overall customer satisfaction.”

This new Can-Am Commander DPS package* takes the base Commander and adds the Dynamic Power Steering system with Visco-Lok QE (quicker engaging), and 27-inch (68.5-cm) Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires on 14-inch (35.5-cm) cast aluminum wheels. Returning for 2013 are the XT and LIMITED packages as well, adding such features like a 4,000-pound (1,814-kg) WARN winch, half-windshield, premium wheels and tires and an entertainment system with integrated Garmin touchscreen GPS.

BRP offers two Rotax V-Twin EFI engines (800R or 1000), which give a key ingredient to the Can-Am Commander formula: power. It is, however, the consumer-friendly features like the exclusive Dual-Level cargo box, comfortable seats and ample room for two adult passengers that complete the overall package.

“Delivering a vehicle for the global market can be a challenge, but BRP meets this challenge head on with a revised Commander line-up that improves upon the Can-Am philosophy of ‘The Ride Says It All’,” said Chris Dawson, vice-president and general manager, International division. “With the addition of DPS to the vehicle, it makes the Can-Am Commander side-by-side vehicle even more the versatile choice in the market for the consumer.”
